MercuRILab (Mercury Research Interdisciplinary Laboratory) is a research group based at the University of Trieste, with almost thirty years of experience in investigating the complex biogeochemical processes of mercury in both terrestrial and aquatic environments.
Our research focuses in particular on the marine-coastal area of Friuli Venezia Giulia, one of the most mercury-contaminated regions in the world, due to the historical mining activities of the Idrija mine (Slovenia).
Equipped with cutting-edge analytical instrumentation, MercuRILab has gradually expanded its scope of activity at both national and international levels, collaborating with local authorities, universities, and research institutions through numerous joint projects.
MercuRILab is not just about mercury. The group is also actively involved in the field of environmental geochemistry, with a specific focus on the mobility of trace elements across various environmental compartments—rocks, soils, sediments, water, vegetation—and even within the food chain.
Our mission is to understand the mechanisms that control the distribution and behavior of contaminants in natural systems, contributing to environmental protection and the sustainable management of natural resources
